Formation:

Verb-casual + とみるや

Example sentences:

いたずらをしていた生徒たちは、教師が来たとみるやいっせいに逃げ出した。
The mischievous students ran away at the sight of their teacher.
itazura o shite ita seitotachi wa, kyoushi ga kita to miru ya issei ni nigedashita.

 

夫が逮捕されるとみるや、彼女は現場を立ち去った。
She fled the scene upon seeing her husband getting arrested.
otto ga taiho sareru to miru ya, kanojo wa genba o tachisatta.

 

士官がうなずくとみるや、彼は足の鉄輪についてた鎖を鉄槌の一撃でうちくだいた。
At an affirmative sign from the officer he broke the chain riveted to his ankle with one blow of a hammer.
shikan ga unazuku to miru ya, kare wa ashi no tetsurin ni tsuiteta kusari o tettsui no ichigeki de uchikudaita.
