Meaning: I thought…; or so we thought

Formation:

Phrase 1 + と思いきや + Phrase 2

Example sentences:

前進を続けると思いきや、リーダーは退却の命令を発した。
I thought we’d advance, but our leader ordered us to retreat.
zenshin o tsuzukeru to omoikiya, riidaa wa taikyaku no meirei o hasshita.

 

彼は海辺の町で育ったと聞いていたので、さぞかし泳ぎがうまいだろうと思いきや、水に浮くこともできないらしい。
I heard that he was raised in a town near the beach so I thought he must be good at swimming, but it seems that he can’t even float.
kare wa umibe no machi de sodatta to kiite ita node, sazokashi oyogi ga umai darou to omoikiya, mizu ni uku koto mo dekinai rashii.

 

テレビが直ったと思いきや、またすぐに壊れてしまった。
I thought the TV has been fixed, but it was broken again.
terebi ga naotta to omoikiya, mata sugu ni kowarete shimatta.

 

試験問題は簡単だったので、満点を取れたと思いきや、名前を書くのを忘れてゼロ点にされてしまった。
The questions were easy so I thought I would get perfect score, but I forgot to write my name so I got a zero.
shiken mondai wa kantan datta node, manten o toreta to omoikiya, namae o kaku no o wasurete zero ten ni sarete shimatta.

 

さぞや明るい男だと思いきや、実は、孤独で悩み多き男だった。
I thought he was a cheerful man, but in reality he was a lonely and troubled man.
sazoya akarui otoko da to omoikiya, jitsu wa, kodoku de nayami ooki otoko datta.

 

やっと富士山の頂上に着いたと思いきや、まだ8合目だった。
I thought I reached the top of Mount Fuji, but I was only at the 8th station.
yatto fujisan no choujou ni tsuita to omoikiya, mada hachi goume datta.

不合格になったと思いきや、意外なことに合格の通知が来た。
I thought I failed, but to my surprise I received notification of passing the exam.
fugoukaku ni natta to omoikiya, igai na koto ni goukaku no tsuuchi ga kita.

庭へ行ってみた。歓声をあげて迎えられるものと思いきや、菊子は晴美のほら話に夢中で耳を傾けていた。
I went out to the garden expecting my appearance to be greeted with hails of delight, but Kikuko was listening spellbound to one of Harumi’s tales.

Yamanaka is offering to take over the project to rebuild the park, and to have it open by July at no cost to the city. After a long multi billion-yen debacle, you would think that the city would be jumping for joy. Not so.
