Learn Japanese Grammar

Meaning: to be bad at something, to be not good at something

Formation:

Verb-dictionary form + のが下手だ

Example sentence:

私は絵を描くのがすごく下手です。
I’m terrible at painting.
watashi wa e o egaku no ga heta desu.

 

僕は走るのが下手です。
I’m not good at running.
boku wa hashiru noga heta desu.

 

おれは泳ぐのが下手だ。
I’m not goot at swimming.
ore wa oyogu noga heta da.

 

お酒を飲むのが下手なのです。
I’m not good at drinking.
osake o nomu no ga heta na no desu.

 

聞くのが下手だと言われました。
I was told that I’m not good at listening.
kiku no ga heta da to iwaremashita.

 

私は他人に対して自分の感じていることを説明するのが下手だった。
I had a hard time explaining my feelings to others.
watashi wa tanin ni tai shite jibun no kanjite iru koto o setsumei suru no ga heta datta.

I love everything about you, including the fact that you’re bad at lying.
anata no zenbu ga suki, uso o tsuku no ga heta na tokoro mo.

 

自分も例外ではないが、我々の世代の人間は、教わるのが下手だ。
I’m no exception, but our generation is really bad at learning.
jibun mo reigai de wa nai ga, wareware no sedai no ningen wa, osowaru no ga heta da.

 

傘をさすのが下手なようで、どうしても足元が濡れます。なぜみなさん濡れないのですか。
I’m not good at holding an umbrella, so my feet are always wet. Why are your feet not wet?
kasa o sasu no ga heta na you de, dou shite mo ashimoto ga nuremasu. naze minasan nurenai no desu ka.

 

子どもはどうして寝るのが下手なの?寝つくまでに時間がかかったり、早朝起きてしまったり、子どもの睡眠トラブルが絶えません。
Why are children so bad at sleeping? It takes time for them to fall asleep, they wake up early in the morning, there’s just no end to kids’ sleeping trouble.
kodomo wa dou shite neru no ga heta na no. netsuku made ni jikan ga kakattari, souchou okite shimattari, kodomo no suimin toraburu ga taemasen.

 

日本人は休むのが下手で、頑張ればうまくいくと思い込み過ぎなのではないか?
Japanese people are not good at taking a break. Are they living under the impression that as long as they do their best, everything will work out just fine?
nihonjin wa yasumu no ga heta de, ganbareba umaku iku to omoikomisugi na no dewa nai ka.
