Meaning: for the first time in (period of time)

Formation:

Noun (measurement of time) + 振り(に)

***Do not add に when ぶり is placed at the end of a sentence.

Example sentences:

彼に会うのは10年ぶりだ。
I haven’t seen him in 10 years.
kare ni au no wa juunen buri da.

 

今日、3ヶ月ぶりにまた九州へ撮影に行ってきました。
We went to Kyushu to film for the first time in 3 months.
kyou, sankagetsu buri ni mata kyuushuu e satsuei ni itte kimashita.

 

一週間ぶりに晴れの日になった。
It’s sunny for the first time in a week.
isshuukan buri ni hare no hi ni natta.

 

彼は三日ぶりに意識を回復した。
He regained consciousness after three days.
kare wa mikka buri ni ishiki o kaifuku shita.

 

5年ぶりの帰国だから家族がとても喜んだ。
As this is the first time in the last five years that I returned home, my family was very happy.
gonen buri no kikoku dakara kazoku ga totemo yorokonda.

 

学校で起きた出来事のおかげで、数週間ぶりに彼女のことなど頭から吹っ飛んだ。
Something happened at school that drove her out of my mind for the first time in weeks.
gakkou de okita dekigoto no okage de, suushuukan buri ni kanojo no koto nado atama kara futtonda.

 

手紙をもらうのはずいぶん久しぶりだった。
It was a long while since I had received a letter.
tegami o morau no wa zuibun hisashiburi datta.

 

シンイチと会ったのはほとんど一年ぶりだった。
Almost a year had gone by since I had last seen Shin’ichi.
shin’ichi to atta no wa hotondo ichinen buri datta.

 

僕は少し赤くなった。人前で赤くなったりしたのは本当に久しぶりだった。
I blushed a little, something I hadn’t done in a long while.
boku wa sukoshi akaku natta. hitomae de akaku nattari shita no wa hontou ni hisashiburi datta.

韓国では5年ぶりにカムバックしたことが、とても大きな出来事だったと思うし、時間がかかったけど、自分でもよく頑張ったなあって思います。

Now, in the fall of 2009, Zardari was the first civilian President in a decade, and he wanted to renew the friendship with the United States.
nisen kyuunen aki no kono toki, zarudari wa juunen buri no bunmin daitouryou toshite, beikokumin to no yuukou o saikai shitai to negatte ita.

 

マモル以外の男の人と夕食をともにするのは何年ぶりだろう。
It has been years since I last had dinner with a man other than Mamoru.
mamoru igai no otoko no hito to yuushoku o tomo ni suru no wa nannen buri darou.
