Formation:

逆に + phrase

Example sentences:

彼はまったくうろたえる様子もなく、逆にニッコリ笑った。
kare wa mattaku urotaeru yousu mo naku, gyaku ni nikkori waratta.
He showed no dismay; on the contrary, he smiled cheerfully.

ケンはソファーのところまで下がった。トニーは逆に前に出た。
ken wa sofaa no tokoro made sagatta. tonii wa gyaku ni mae ni deta.
Ken retreated to the sofa. Tony, however, moved forward.

親は心配して子どもの様子を知りたがっていたし、逆に、家族は無事だと子どもに知らせて、安心させようとしていた。
oya wa shinpai shite kodomo no yousu o shiritagatte ita shi, gyaku ni, kazoku wa buji da to kodomo ni shirasete, anshin saseyou to shite ita.
Anxious parents were keen to hear from their children and to reassure them, in return, that all was well at home.
