Meaning: right after; as soon as

Formation:

Verb-dictionary form + か + Verb-ないform + うちに/かのうちに
Verb-casual, past + か + Verb-ないform + うちに/かのうちに

Example sentences:

ベルが鳴るかならないかのうちに、先生が教室に入ってきた。
The teacher entered the classroom as soon as the bell rang.
beru ga naru ka naranai ka no uchi ni, sensei ga kyoushitsu ni haitte kita.

 

彼が汽車が止まるか止まらないうちにホームに飛び降りた。
He jumped onto the platform as soon as the train stopped.
kare ga kisha ga tomaru ka tomaranai uchi ni hoomu ni tobiorita.

 

娘が出かけるか出かけないかのうちに雨が降り出した。
It started raining as soon as my daughter went out.
musume ga dekakeru ka dekakenai ka no uchi ni ame ga furidashita.

 

今朝まだ目が覚めるか覚めないかのうちに、友達が迎えに来た。
My friend came to pick me up right after I woke up this morning.
kesa mada me ga sameru ka samenai ka no uchi ni, tomodachi ga mukae ni kita.

 

息子は「いってきます」と言い終わるか終わらないかのうちに玄関を飛び出していった。
My son rushed out of the entranceway as soon as he said “I’m off.”
musuko wa itte kimasu to iiowaru ka owaranai ka no uchi ni genkan o tobidashite itta.

 

彼らが向きを変えるか変えないうちに、小男がテーブルの下から突然現れた。
They had barely turned around when a little man appeared suddenly from under the table.
karera ga muki o kaeru ka kaenai uchi ni, kootoko ga teeburu no shita kara totsuzen arawareta.

 

彼女は「いただきます」と言うか言わないかのうちに食べ始めた。
She started eating right after she said “itadakimasu”.
kanojo wa itadakimasu to iu ka iwanai ka no uchi ni tabehajimeta.

「もう着くころだ」彼の言葉が終わるか終わらないうちに、汽車が速度を落としはじめた。
“We must be nearly there.” The words had hardly left him when the train started to slow down.
mou tsuku koro da. kare no kotoba ga owaru ka owaranai uchi ni, kisha ga sokudo o otoshi hajimeta.

 

私たちはその橋を突き進んでいった。しかし、橋の向こう側に着くか着かないかのうちに、追っ手の叫び声を耳にした。
We dashed along the bridge, but we had hardly reached its further end when we heard our pursuer’s cry.
watashitachi wa sono hashi o tsukisusunde itta. shikashi, hashi no mukougawa ni tsuku ka tsukanai ka no uchi ni, otte no sakebigoe o mimi ni shita.

 

ヒロユキはほっと吐息をつくと、ハルミの言葉が終わるか終わらないかのうちに眠ってしまった。
Hiroyuki sighed and was asleep almost before Harumi’s words were spoken.
hiroyuki wa hotto toiki o tsuku to, harumi no kotoba ga owaru ka owaranai ka no uchi ni nemutte shimatta.

 

幸いわたしは船酔いはしないけれども、かわいそうにアキラはそうではない。東京湾を出るか出ないのうちに、もうまっ青な顔になった。
Fortunately I am an excellent sailor, but Akira is not. He began turning green as soon as we were out of Tokyo Bay.
saiwai watashi wa funayoi wa shinai keredomo, kawaisou ni akira wa sou dewa nai. toukyou wan o deru ka denai no uchi ni, mou massao na kao ni natta.
