Formation:

Verb-casual, past + かと思ったら/かと思うと/かと思えば

Example sentences:

娘が勉強を始めたかと思えば、もう居間でテレビを見ている。
Just when I thought my daughter was studying, she’s already in the living room watching TV.
musume ga benkyou o hajimeta ka to omoeba, mou ima de terebi o mite iru.

 

彼は家に着いたかと思うと玄関に倒れてしまった。
As soon as he reached the house, he collapsed at the entranceway.
kare wa ie ni tsuita ka to omou to genkan ni taorete shimatta.

 

姉は出かけたかと思うとすぐ忘れ物を取りに帰ってきた。
As soon as my big sister left, she came back to get something she forgot.
ane wa dekaketa ka to omou to sugu wasuremono o tori ni kaette kita.

 

弟は、さっき起きてきたかと思ったら、また寝ている。
Just when I thought my little brother has waken up, he’s sleeping again.
otouto wa, sakki okite kita ka to omottara, mata nete iru.

 

急に空が暗くなったかと思うと、激しく雨が降り始めた。
As soon as the sky turned black, it started raining heavily.
kyuu ni sora ga kuraku natta ka to omou ka, hageshiku ame ga furi hajimeta.

 

彼女は忙しい人で、来たかと思ったら、もう帰ってしまった。
She’s a busy person. Just when I thought she had arrived, she had already left.
kanojo wa isogashii hito de, kita ka to omottara, mou kaette shimatta.

 

田中さんは「さようなら」と言ったかと思うと教室を飛び出していった。
As soon as Tanaka said “goodbye”, he rushed out of the classroom.
tanaka san wa sayounara to itta ka to omou to kyoushitsu o tobidashite itta.

 

銀色の槍が林立して、ふいに空中に現れ、陣営の鬨の声が沸き起こったかと思うと、やがて何百という熱せられた蛇のようにシュウシュウと音を立てて、川の水の中に落ちていきました。
There was a forest of silver spears that sprang suddenly into the air with a yell like an embattled army, and came down again into the water with a hiss like a hundred hot snakes.

Something struck me violently in the back, my legs were knocked from under me and I was flung aside, striking my head against the stony floor.

子供は泣いていたかと思うともう次の遊びに突進している。
A child can cry one moment and run off to play the next.
kodomo wa naite ita ka to omou to mou tsugi no asobi ni tosshin shite iru.

 

大きな暗雲が、ちらちらと火を明滅させながら、ぽっと空中高く上がったかと思うと、ぐんぐんと速いかに上昇し、山頂より遥かに高く上っていった。
Rising swiftly up, far above the mountains, a vast soaring darkness sprang into the sky, flickering with fire.

The glass dropped from Shuichi’s hand onto the carpet. He took a few steps blindly, then collapsed.
shuuichi no te kara gurasu ga juutan no ue ni ochita. ni, sanpo furafura to fumidashita ka to omou to, kare wa kuzuoreru you ni taoreta.

 

寝室に着いたかと思うと、寮長の声が聞こえてきた。
On reaching the bedroom, I heard the voice of the dorm leader.
shinshitsu ni tsuita ka to omou to, ryouchou no koe ga kikoete kita.

 

Similar grammar:
