Meaning: as if; as though

Formation:

Verb-ないform (-ない) + んばかり + に/の/だ

Exception: する -> せん + ばかりに

Example sentences:

彼女は胸もはり裂けんばかりにわっと泣きくずれた。
kanojo wa mune mo harisaken bakari ni watto nakikuzureta.
She cried as though her heart would break.

そうだろうか、と言わんばかりに彼女は目を見開いた。
sou darou ka, to iwan bakari ni kanojo wa me o mihiraita.
Her eyes widened as if to say: is it really so?

彼は今にも気も狂わんばかりの状態だった。
kare wa imanimo ki mo kuruwan bakari no joutai datta.
He felt that he was going mad.

頭はズキズキと割れんばかりだ。
atama wa zukizuki to waren bakari da.
I feel like my head is about to burst.

彼は、言わなくともわかるだろうと言わんばかりだった。
kare wa, iwanaku tomo wakaru darou to iwan bakari datta.
He said as though explaining the obvious.

彼が幸せのあまり泣かんばかりの様子で彼女に近づいてきた。
kare ga shiawase no amari nakan bakari no yousu de kanojo ni chikazuite kita.
He elbowed his way closer to her, almost crying with happiness.
