Formation:

Verb-dictionary form + や/や否や

Example sentences:

彼が家から出てゆくやいなや、例の旅の男がはいってきた。
As soon as he left the house, that traveler came in.
kare ga ie kara deteyuku ya ina ya, rei no tabi no otoko ga haitte kita.

 

会社に着くや否や、またまたいいことが起こった。
No sooner had I arrived at the company than something good happened.
kaisha ni tsuku ya ina ya, matamata ii koto ga okotta.

 

不運な娘が眼をとじるやいなやジョンは手紙をひらこうと思った。
The unhappy girl had hardly closed her eyes when John began to think of unfolding the letter.
fuun na musume ga me o tojiru ya ina ya jon wa tegami o hirakou to omotta.

 

わたしはその人の顔を人目見るや否や、10年前に別れた恋人だと気がついた。
The moment I saw that man’s face, I realized right away that he was the man I broke up with 10 years ago.
watashi wa sono hito no kao o hitome miru ya ina ya, juunen mae ni wakareta koibito da to ki ga tsuita.

 

彼が登場するや否や、会場から割れんばかりの拍手が沸き起こった。
The moment he appeared on stage, the audience burst into thunderous applause.
kare ga toujou suru ya ina ya, kaijou kara waren bakari no hakushu ga wakiokotta.

 

ドアが開くや、猫が飛び出してきた。
As soon as the door opened, the cat jumped out.
doa ga hiraku ya, neko ga tobidashite kita.

 

ベルが鳴るや否や、学生たちはいっせいに書き始めた。
As soon as the bell rang, the students started writing.
beru ga naru ya ina ya, gakuseitachi wa issei ni kaki hajimeta.

 

授業が始まるや否や、彼は眠りを始めた。
As soon as the class began, he started dozing off.
jugyou ga hajimaru ya ina ya, kare wa nemuri o hajimeta.

 

その男の人は部屋に入るや否や、いきなり大声で怒鳴り始めた。
That man started yelling right after he entered the room.
sono otoko no hito wa heya ni hairu ya ina ya, ikinari oogoe de dorani hajimeta.

 

食卓に到着するや否や、彼女が詰め寄った。
She cornered me just as I arrived at the dining table.
shokutaku ni touchaku suru ya ina ya, kanojo ga tsumeyotta.

 

マスコミが井出の攻撃に出るやいなや、彼の態度を豹変させた。
No sooner did the press jump on Ide’s case than he reversed field completely.
masukomi ga ide no kougeki ni deru ya ina ya, kare no taido o hyouhen saseta.

The moment she became prime minister, she announced Boris Johnson will become the country’s top diplomat.
kanojo wa shushou ni shuunin shita ya ina ya, borisu jonson shi o gaishou ni ninmei suru to happyou shimashita.

 

僕が去るやいなや、十数人の行商人がたちまちホテルの前に店をひろげ、そこに居座ってしまった。
As soon as I left, a dozen street peddlers immediately set up shop in front of the hotel, and they haven’t moved since.

私が計画を公表するやいなや、操車場跡地に対する他の応札者たちが突如姿を現した。
No sooner had I announced my plans publicly than other bidders for the switchyards suddenly came out of the woodwork.
watashi ga keikaku o kouhyou suru ya ina ya, sousajou atochi ni taisuru hoka no ousatsushatachi ga totsujo sugata o arawashita.

 

トモヤは、友人が問題を起こしたと見るやいなや、ひたすら相手を遠ざけようとする。
At the first hint that any of his friends might be in trouble, Tomoya can’t run fast enough the other way.
tomoya wa, yuujin ga mondai o okoshita to miru ya ina ya, hitasura aite o toozakeyou to suru.

 

ひとたび汽車がとまるや、現地人の一団がとうもろこしの鉢やさとうきびやかわいい木彫りの動物などを手に手にかかげて、建物のなんにもないところからいつの間にかあらわれた。
No sooner had the train stopped than a horde of natives materialized out of the empty landscape, holding up maize bowls and sugar canes and adorable carved wooden animals.
